Welcome to our Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD). At DustcomHDD, we specialize in providing top-quality HDD solutions for a wide range of underground projects.
DustcomHDD is a dynamic and innovative company based in South Africa, dedicated to providing top-quality trenchless technology services. As a 100% black-owned and managed company, we are committed to excellence and professionalism in all aspects of our work. We understand the importance of minimizing disruption to the environment and existing infrastructure. That's why we specialize in trenchless technology, specifically horizontal directional drilling, which allows us to install underground utilities with minimal excavation, reducing environmental impact and saving time.
Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) is a trenchless technology method used to install underground utilities, such as pipes, cables, and conduits, without the need for extensive excavation. Unlike traditional drilling methods that require vertical or angled boreholes, HDD involves drilling a pilot hole horizontally along a predetermined path. This pilot hole is then enlarged using reaming tools to accommodate the utilities.
HDD offers several advantages over conventional drilling techniques. Firstly, it is environmentally friendly as it minimizes the disruption caused by excavation, reducing the impact on ecosystems and preserving natural habitats. Additionally, HDD eliminates the need for extensive restoration work, saving both time and money.
The ability to install utilities under obstacles like rivers, roads, and existing infrastructure is another significant advantage of HDD. It allows for the efficient and cost-effective installation of pipelines and cables in urban areas, where open trenching would be disruptive and expensive.
Horizontal directional drilling finds application in various industries and projects. In the telecommunications sector, HDD is widely used for installing fiber optic cables, enabling high-speed internet connectivity in urban and rural areas. It also plays a crucial role in oil and gas pipeline installations, providing a safer and more efficient method for crossing water bodies and challenging terrains.
Water and sewer projects benefit from HDD as well, allowing for the installation of water and wastewater pipelines with minimal disruption to existing infrastructure. HDD is also employed in utility projects, such as the installation of power and gas lines, ensuring uninterrupted services to residential and commercial areas.
Dustcom HDD is a specialized provider of reliable and efficient horizontal directional drilling (HDD) services. With a team of highly skilled professionals, we possess the expertise to execute complex HDD projects with precision. We pride ourselves on utilizing state-of-the-art equipment and advanced techniques to ensure optimal drilling performance and accurate borehole placement.
At Dustcom HDD, we prioritize safety, quality, and customer satisfaction in every project we undertake. We understand the importance of clear communication and collaboration with our clients throughout the project lifecycle. From initial project planning and design to execution and post-installation support, our comprehensive approach ensures that every aspect is carefully addressed.
The first stage of the directional drilling process involves drilling a small diameter pilot hole. The drilling fluid, typically pumped through the drill pipe, reaches the drill bit where high-pressure jets and the bit grind the soils in front of the drill stem. Tracking of the pilot hole can be done using various methods, depending on the size and complexity of the shot. Smaller shots may use a walkover guidance tool, while larger shots employ a cord line magnetics system.
These methods utilize a transmitter tool near the drill head to provide continuous readings of depth, alignment, and percentage slope. The speed of drilling the pilot hole depends on steering requirements and the texture of the existing soil. Once the drill reaches the exit point, the beacon housing and bit are replaced with a reamer for the next stage.
In the second stage, the pilot hole is pre-reamed to enlarge it to a size suitable for the safe installation of product lines or HDPE pipes. A reamer is used to expand the hole in a circular motion, making it larger. Pre-reaming speeds are determined based on the conditions of the pilot hole. To ensure a clean and stable hole, bentonite and other chemicals may be used. Bentonite helps create a “cake layer” on the outer side of the hole during pre-reaming, enhancing hole stability.
The final stage involves pulling the pipe back into the pre-reamed hole. The drill rod and reamer can be connected to a swivel to facilitate the process. As the product pipe is pulled into the drill hole, drilling fluids are pumped downhole to provide lubrication. This helps in smooth and controlled pipe pullback.
